scaredketchup AI Taylor Swift & I go way back. I've just launched my sixth “AI Taylor Swift” music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaVjI... More on that later. I Got to the Future Early. Then Everybody Showed Up. Almost four years ago, when I started making comedy videos with early AI tools, only a handful of people were doing anything remotely similar. The software was primitive, unstable and apparently powered by a haunted toaster. There were no established workflows, almost no tutorials and very little competition. Every usable shot felt like I had personally smuggled it out of the future. Then Will Smith ate the spaghetti. About a year into my journey, that disturbing little clip of slap happy Smith and the bolognese escaped the laboratory, and suddenly the internet was buried beneath ten thousand variations of “I asked AI to make a McDonald’s commercial.” For months—possibly a year; time has lost all meaning—AI video consisted mainly of malformed celebrities eating food, imaginary restaurants selling meat from another dimension and people with seventeen fingers attempting to hold cheeseburgers. I’m pretty sure that’s where the term AI slop came from. Then the tools improved. That attracted talented amateurs, animators, editors, actual filmmakers and suspiciously gifted teenagers capable of producing in one afternoon what had taken me three weeks and a minor psychological event. About eighteen months ago, what I was doing stopped being novel. Other creators began making similar work with the same tools, techniques and probably many of the same malfunctioning digital actors. Then, roughly six months ago, everything accelerated into madness. The applications became easier. There were more of them. New models appeared every Tuesday, each promising cinematic perfection and delivering, at minimum, one excellent shot of a horse turning into a refrigerator. When I started, there may have been only a few hundred people regularly posting AI filmmaking experiments. Now it feels like millions are trying it. I arrived near the beginning of the wave, and since then it has crested, crashed and rebuilt itself hundreds of times. What once felt like my strange private laboratory has become an international shopping mall with a food court and six competing stores selling Robot Trump. Perfect Timing Naturally, this creative explosion occurred at almost the exact moment YouTube demonetized my channel. By then, I was already exhausted. I had spent three and a half years working seven days a week, often ten hours a day—writing, generating, editing, compositing, revising, rendering, uploading, deleting, appealing and occasionally staring silently at a progress bar while reconsidering every decision that had led me there. I wasn’t merely burned out. I was the charred outline of a content creator on the side of a building. Then my income dropped by roughly 90 percent. So I found myself facing a beautiful double whammy: almost no energy left and almost no money coming in for continuing to spend it. Meanwhile, my competition had gone from nearly zero to several million people with faster computers, fresher nervous systems and fewer children asking what’s for dinner during a thirty-minute render. It has been difficult to know how to pick up the pieces. Can I continue doing this after losing most of the income? Not for much longer. But I still have great work inside me. I still have ideas I want to make. I still have two children to raise. And after spending most of my adult life making comedy videos, I’m not entirely sure what my backup profession is supposed to be. I would be a terrible Uber driver. “Would you mind changing the music?” “Fuck off.” The strangest part is that I believe I’m making the best videos I’ve ever made. They are more technically layered, cinematic and visually ambitious than anything I could have produced even two months ago. And yet, unless a large account reposts one on Twitter, the videos seem to have almost no chance of breaking out. Maybe YouTube has decided I’m just not worth the trouble. Maybe the audience has changed. Maybe there is simply too much content. Maybe the algorithm examined my life’s work and filed it inside a digital cabinet labeled: OLD MAN MAKES ROBOT TRUMP FALL INTO INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY… AGAIN. The Superman Problem There is another possibility: maybe the work has become too slick. There is now so much AI wizardry online that a large portion of the public has become suspicious of anything unusually polished. Some people fear AI. Many hate it outright. Others have consumed so much of it that they’ve developed the visual equivalent of food poisoning. My complete workflow merger with AI makes me feel like Superman while I’m creating. I can imagine a scene, build the world, rewrite the joke, alter the lighting, move the camera and keep grinding until something that once existed only inside my head is suddenly moving on a screen. It is an extraordinary feeling. But that feeling comes with a question: How do I use everything these tools can do without sanding away the human fingerprints that made people care in the first place? November Is Coming Which brings me to today. I’ll soon be dropping my latest AI Taylor Swift video, “November Is Coming.” I worked my butt off on this one, another eighty hours inside the Matrix, easily. Probably more. But one thing still makes this ridiculous process deeply gratifying: I’ve now made six AI Taylor videos because my daughter loves them, and I love her. That is the least technological part of the operation. Underneath the software, synthetic lighting, digital costumes, impossible camera moves and endless arguments with machines about the proper scale of a fifteen-story robot, there is still a father trying to make his daughter laugh. Perhaps that love will shine through. Perhaps people will forgive the slickness and recognize the human fingerprints underneath: the jokes, exhaustion, stubbornness, experience and slightly deranged man manually directing every frame. And also, and this is a very big also, Taylor Swift has not sued me… yet. Which, to me, suggests one obvious conclusion: She approves. These videos have accumulated millions of views. Believing that one of the most copyright-protected people on Earth remains unaware that Joe Internet Rando is using her name, likeness and sound-alike vocals to generate massive engagement would be like believing Disney overlooked Pumbaa and Maui hosting a swingers’ cruise. Surely somebody inside the Swift Command Center has seen one. A lawyer. An assistant. A cousin. A guy whose sole job is typing “Taylor Swift AI parody” into a search bar while wearing camo and tactical headphones. And yet: no cease-and-desist. No mysterious black SUV. No sharply worded letter informing me that I now owe Taylor my house, my children and my remaining good hip. I quietly whisper that she must be a fan and my daughter laughs her ass off at my utter and complete pomposity. Fair enough. But still—things that make you go hmmm. So, perhaps this will be my last music video, I dunno. I’m also doing an old school episode of the Trump Show set to drop 7/30. Whatever happens with algorithms, monetization, AI backlash or the ten million new filmmakers arriving behind me, I’m proud of the work I’ve done here. It is funny, ambitious and completely excessive. Yes, it was made with the help of machines, but much of it was made for my daughter. I hope people can still feel that. (3 days ago (edited))
